The Best Hair Oil for You

We all love oils and regardless of your hair texture oils can have a tonne of benefits and help unleash the hair of your dreams. You can use oils while massaging your scalp, during hair treatments and curlier and coily hair textures (or high porosity hair) can even benefit from oils to seal in moisture. The only problem is, is that there are so many to choose from, so how do you know what is best for you. Well, I’m here to help you find the best hair oil for you.

There are two types of oils, carrier oils (vegetable oils) and essential oils. Carrier oils are a combination of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids commonly extracted from various parts of plants such as seeds, fruits, or plant seedlings. Carrier oils properties vary widely depending upon the individual percentages of fatty acids in each different oil composition. Essential oils are compounds extracted from plants. The oils capture the plant’s scent and flavour, also called its “essence.” Essential oils are most commonly used in the practice of aromatherapy. They are either inhaled, or diluted then rubbed on the skin. One benefit some essential oils have is improving hair and scalp health. Different oils can do everything, from helping hair grow to adding strength and shine.

Since I create custom hair care products, I have done a lot of research into hair oils and their abilities and have devised a list of the best oils for different hair goals.

Dry Hair

Oils can be a great method for moisturising dry hair as some oils can penetrate the hair cuticles and they can lock in moisture. If you struggle with dry hair, the best hair oil for you is Argan oil, Hemp Seed Oil and Sweet Almond Oil are great lightweight and high in linoleic acid meaning it can easily diffuse into the hair due to having smaller bonds. This makes them a great moisturiser and can be used to fight both dandruff and dry scalp without weighing down the hair too much. As these are carrier oils, a great essential oil to add would be Ylang-Ylang Essential Oil as it can stimulate sebum production which is our scalps natural oils. As lack of enough oil and sebum causes hair to become dry and brittle, Ylang-Ylang can improve hair texture and reduce hair breakage. Not only can these oils be great at moisturising but they can also lock in moisture too if you are following the LOC method.

I’m not sure about you but hair growth is always a major goal of mine and I swear by oil scalp massages for my hair growth. Hair oils can help to nourish and protect the hair and stimulate the scalp to encourage growth. The ends of your hair are the weakest and need the most care so if you are trying to grow your hair, you will find apply oils to the ends as well will make a big difference. The best hair oils for hair growth are Coconut oil, Castor Oil and Avocado Oil. Coconut Oil is best known for its ability to penetrate the hair and it has a high affinity for the proteins in the hair. It also has a low molecular weight and straight linear chain (which most polyunsaturated oils don’t) so it can penetrate into the cortex itself. Once it gets there, it can prevent the loss of protein from the hair. Avocado Oil contains vitamins and minerals such as copper, iron, vitamin A, B6, D, and E and has the ability to deeply nourish and strengthen both the hair and the scalp which in turn can create the perfect environment for improved hair growth. As these are carrier oils, a great essential oil to add would be Lavender Essential Oil. Lavender has properties that can generate the growth of cells and reduce stress, researchers on one animal study found that this oil was able to generate faster hair growth in mice.

Damaged Hair

Split ends are the worst, and while you may need to trim them off, you can still use hair oils to help reverse and reduce hair damage. Hair damage can be caused by something extreme like chemical processes hair dye and heat or something simple like over manipulation or the wrong tools. To keep damage at bay, these are the best hair oils for damaged hair, Passion Fruit Seed Oil, Brazil Nut Oil and Buriti Oil. Treatment of the hair using these oils reduced the formation of split hairs. The oils also reduced the ‘force’ of combing when the hair was wet – in other words, they made it easier to comb the hair. This reduction in combing forces can be attributed to the lubricant effects of the oil. The essential fatty acids in these oils are excellent at maintaining elasticity, protecting from physical damage and heat/UV damage. These oils are very good detangler agents when used on wet coily and curly hair. As these are carrier oils, a great essential oil to add would be Lavender essential oil. Lemongrass has healing properties and works to strengthen your hair follicles and soothe an itchy and irritated scalp.

Dull Hair

If you struggle with dull fine hair, the best hair oil for you are Sunflower Oil, Argan Oil and Abyssinian Oil. Sunflower oil does not penetrate beyond the cuticle as it is bulkier and contains double bonds. For that reason, it doesn’t reach the cortex, but instead forms more of a ‘film’ on the surface of the cuticle. Abyssinian oil is very lightweight, making it a brilliant option for thin, fine or greasy hair that can easily become lank if overloaded but will still give a nice shine. Lastly, Argan oil is a lightweight oil that helps with frizz and styling. Regular use of Argan oil, your hair can look shiny, silky, and healthy. As these are carrier oils, a great essential oil to add would be Chamomile Essential Oil. Chamomile oil is a great essential oil for hair because it adds shine and softness to your hair while soothing your scalp. It can even be used to naturally lighten your hair.

There are countless oils out there with a range of amazing benefits that target specific problems. Give these oils a try and see what works for you. It is all about understanding your hair and what it needs to stay healthy.
